Double-sided scanning depends on your scanner hardware. A printer with a duplex automatic document feeder can scan both sides on its own. A flatbed scanner or single-sided feeder can still do the job, but you have to flip and merge the pages carefully.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you need both sides of several pages saved into one file, but the printer scans only one side or your app does not make the page order obvious.
Automatic duplex scanning
This works only when the ADF supports two-sided scanning. Look for duplex scanning or duplex ADF in the printer specifications.
- Load the double-sided pages into the automatic document feeder, not onto the flatbed glass.
- Open the printer app, such as HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Scan/Smart Panel, or Brother software.
- Find the scan setting named 2-Sided, Duplex, Both Sides, or similar.
- Choose PDF if you want one multi-page document.
- Start the scan and let the feeder pull each page through in order.
Manual double-sided scanning
Use this with any scanner when automatic duplex is unavailable.
- Scan all front sides first into one PDF or one set of files.
- Flip the stack and reload it so the back sides scan in the matching order your software expects.
- Scan the backs into a second file if the app cannot interleave them automatically.
- Merge or reorder the PDFs so the final order is front 1, back 1, front 2, back 2, and so on.
- Check every page before deleting the originals.
More control
Turn on OCR when you need searchable text
OCR adds a text layer so you can search or copy from the PDF later. Enable it before scanning when the option exists.
Reverse only the back-side file if the order is wrong
If fronts and backs do not pair correctly, the back-side file is usually reversed. Fix that order in the PDF tool instead of rescanning everything.
Do not overload the feeder
ADF trays often handle only 20 to 50 sheets. Scan long documents in batches to avoid jams.
