Replacing an ink cartridge is simple, but small details matter. Leaving protective tape on, touching copper contacts, or not clicking the cartridge fully into place can cause streaks, missing colors, or cartridge not recognized messages.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the printer says ink is low or empty, a new cartridge is not recognized, or prints look wrong after an ink change.
Replace the cartridge step by step
Keep the printer powered on so the carriage can move into replacement position.
- Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
- Press the cartridge that needs replacement until it releases, then pull it out.
- Unpack the new cartridge and remove the orange or pink protective tape covering contacts or nozzles.
- Avoid touching copper contacts or nozzle areas with your fingers.
- Insert the cartridge into the matching color slot at a slight angle and press until it clicks.
- Replace any other needed cartridges and close the access door.
- Let alignment or initialization finish, then print a nozzle check or test page.
More control
Run printhead cleaning if output is streaky
A fresh cartridge can still need a cleaning cycle if dried ink is in the nozzles. Use the printer maintenance menu or driver utility.
Cartridge not recognized
Remove and reinsert the cartridge firmly. If needed, wipe copper contacts with a dry cloth and check that no tape remains. Third-party or refilled cartridges can also trigger recognition errors.
Do not leave slots empty
Have the new cartridge ready before removing the old one. Leaving cartridges out can dry exposed nozzles and create new print-quality problems.
