Epson EcoTank printers use refillable tanks instead of disposable cartridges. You can see the ink level through the tank window, and Epson bottles are designed to fit only the matching color. The key is to refill at the right time and let the bottle drain without squeezing.
Does this affect you?
Use this guide if an EcoTank printer shows low ink, a tank is near the lower line, or you want to avoid spills and overfilling during a refill.
Refill a tank
Work one color at a time.
- Check the tank window or Epson software and refill only when the ink is at or near the lower line.
- Open the tank access cover.
- Open the cap for the color you are refilling.
- Open the matching ink bottle according to the bottle instructions.
- Insert the bottle upright into the keyed tank port. Do not squeeze.
- Let ink flow until it stops automatically or reaches the full line.
- Pull the bottle straight up, close the tank cap firmly, and close the access cover.
- Repeat only for colors that need ink.
Confirm the level and reset the counter if prompted
Some models track ink electronically in addition to the visible tank.
- Turn on the printer and check for low-ink messages.
- If the printer or Epson app asks you to confirm a refill, choose the option that says the tank was refilled.
- If no prompt appears, rely on the visible tank level and continue.
More control
Use the exact bottle for your model
EcoTank bottles are matched to printer series. Check the printer and bottle model numbers before buying.
Do not tip or squeeze
The self-stopping design works when the bottle is upright. Squeezing can overfill the tank and cause a spill.
Wipe spills immediately
Ink stains quickly. Keep paper towels nearby and work over a protected surface.
If you overfill
Stop, wipe up visible ink, and do not run the printer if ink is above the full line or leaking. Contact Epson support for model-specific advice.
Refills are infrequent for most homes
EcoTank bottles hold much more ink than cartridges, so many home users refill only a few times per year.
