Inkjet printers have tiny nozzles that spray ink onto the page. When ink dries inside them, prints show faint lines, missing colors, broken text, or streaky patches. The first fix is the built-in nozzle check and head cleaning tool, which is designed for exactly this problem.

Use this guide if printouts have horizontal gaps, missing color bands, pale streaks, or uneven ink after the printer sat unused or ran low on ink.
Run a nozzle check and head cleaning from the computer
The names differ by brand, but HP, Epson, Canon, and Brother all include maintenance tools.
- Open the printer software: HP Smart, Epson Printer Utility, Canon IJ Printer Utility, Brother software, or the driver Maintenance tab.
- Look for Printer Care, Maintenance, Utility, or Print Nozzle Check Pattern.
- Print the nozzle check and compare it with the sample. Gaps show which nozzle rows are clogged.
- Run Head Cleaning or Clean Printhead, then print another nozzle check.
- Repeat cleaning up to two or three times, checking after each cycle. If it does not improve after that, stop and try deeper troubleshooting because cleaning uses ink.
Run cleaning from the printer control panel
Use this if the printer is not connected to a computer.
- On touchscreen printers, open Settings, Setup, Tools, or Maintenance.
- Choose Nozzle Check, Print Head Cleaning, or a similar option.
- On button-only printers, check the manual for the maintenance button combination, often involving an ink-drop button.
- Let the cycle finish fully before printing or powering off.
More control
Manual cleaning is a last step
If repeated cycles fail, some removable-cartridge printers allow gentle cleaning around the printhead contact area with a dry lint-free cloth, or softening dried ink over a slightly damp paper towel. Do not scrub the nozzle plate or use abrasive tools.
Print regularly
A small color page every week or two keeps ink moving and prevents many clogs.
Ink quality matters
Some cheap refilled or third-party inks clog more often because the formula does not match the printhead as well as manufacturer ink.
Use the printer power button
Turn inkjets off with their own button so the printhead parks and seals correctly. Cutting power from a strip can skip that protection and dry the head.
