A Brother printer that feeds paper but prints a blank page usually has blocked ink flow, an empty or poorly seated cartridge, protective tape left on a new cartridge, a clogged printhead, or a document setting that sends the image outside the printable area.
Does this affect you?
Use this guide if pages come out completely blank or mostly blank even though the printer sounds like it is printing normally. These steps focus on Brother inkjet models, where blank pages are often ink-flow related.
Check ink levels and reseat cartridges
Start here, especially if the problem began after installing new ink.
- Check ink levels on the printer display or in Brother iPrint&Scan/Brother Utilities.
- If a cartridge is empty or nearly empty, replace it.
- If a cartridge was just installed, remove it and check for orange protective tape or plastic film covering the ink outlet. Remove it fully.
- Reinstall the cartridge until it clicks firmly into place.
- Print a test page. If it is still blank, continue with printhead cleaning.
Clean a clogged printhead
Dried ink is common when an inkjet printer sits unused for weeks.
- Open Brother Utilities on Windows or use the printer maintenance menu.
- Run Cleaning or Print Head Cleaning and wait for it to finish.
- Print a nozzle check or test pattern.
- If lines are missing, repeat cleaning up to two more times.
- If three cleanings still leave blank output, the cartridge or printhead may be too dried out for normal cleaning to recover.
More control
Check paper size and margins
If the document page size does not match the loaded paper, content may print outside the printable area. Match the print dialog to the paper in the tray, such as Letter in the United States, and avoid zero custom margins.
Try a different document
A corrupted document or empty print job can make the printer look guilty. Print a simple text file from another app. If that works, the original document or app settings caused the blank page.
Prevent dried ink
Inkjet printheads dry out when unused. If you print rarely, run a nozzle check occasionally and leave the printer plugged in so automatic maintenance can run.
