
A desktop power supply unit, or PSU, converts wall power into the stable low-voltage power your PC components need. It feeds the motherboard, CPU, graphics card, drives, and fans through separate cables. Without it, nothing inside the case can run.
Does this affect you?
This matters when building or upgrading a desktop, adding a graphics card, diagnosing shutdowns, or comparing wattage recommendations. Laptops use an external charger brick instead of an internal desktop PSU.
What a power supply actually does
A PSU is a converter and distributor, not just an on/off box.
- It changes AC wall electricity into DC voltages such as 12V, 5V, and 3.3V for computer parts.
- It sends power through specific connectors: 24-pin motherboard, CPU EPS, PCIe GPU cables, SATA power, and others.
- Its wattage rating is the maximum combined power it can safely provide to the system.
- 80 PLUS efficiency ratings describe how much wall power becomes usable output instead of waste heat. Gold, Platinum, and Titanium units waste less power than lower-rated units.
- Laptop chargers perform the conversion outside the laptop, so the desktop PSU concept does not apply the same way.
Making sense of wattage
More wattage does not force extra electricity into parts; components draw only what they need.
- A 750W PSU in a 400W system supplies around what the system asks for under load.
- The graphics card is usually the biggest wattage driver, ranging from low-power cards to high-end GPUs that draw hundreds of watts.
- Check your current PSU label through a side window, system invoice, or manufacturer spec sheet if possible. If you open the case, unplug power first and use basic static precautions.
- Leave headroom. A PSU running near its limit is hotter and less efficient, so many builds target 20 to 30 percent spare capacity above expected peak draw.
A few things worth knowing
Modular cables improve cable management
A fully modular PSU lets you connect only the cables you need. That keeps the case cleaner and can improve airflow compared with permanently attached unused cables.
Do not buy the cheapest unknown PSU
A poor-quality PSU can cause crashes, unstable voltage, shutdowns, or in rare failures damage other parts. Reputable brands, safety certifications, and good reviews matter more here than flashy wattage.
A failing PSU can mimic other faults
Random shutdowns, no-power symptoms, and crashes under load can look like motherboard, GPU, or RAM problems even when the power supply is the root cause.
