USB Ports Not Working? How to Fix It

When one flash drive fails, the device may be the problem. When nothing works in any USB port, the issue usually lives in Windows, power management, a hub, BIOS settings, or the USB controller itself. The steps below reset the USB stack without touching your personal files.

Does this affect you?

This guide is for cases where several known-good devices fail: a mouse does not light up, a phone does not charge, and a flash drive makes no connection sound. If only one accessory fails, troubleshoot that device first.

Rule out the obvious first

These checks take less than a minute and prevent wasted driver work.

  1. Test with a device you know works, such as a wired mouse, in every available port including rear, front, side, and laptop ports.
  2. If a hub or dock is involved, bypass it and plug directly into the computer. A powerless or underpowered hub can make every port behind it look dead.
  3. Restart the PC. A full restart can reset USB controllers when sleep and wake do not.
  4. On laptops, check for any function-key toggle or physical switch that may disable wireless or external devices on that model.

Reinstall the USB controllers in Device Manager

This forces Windows to rebuild the USB controller entries and does not remove your documents or apps.

  1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click each Root Hub, Host Controller, and Generic USB Hub entry and choose Uninstall device. Windows will restore the drivers automatically.
  4. After all related entries are removed, restart the computer.
  5. Wait until Windows fully loads, then test the ports again.

Fix USB power management

Power-saving settings can shut down USB controllers and sometimes leave them in the wrong state.

  1. In Device Manager, open each USB Root Hub, then go to Properties > Power Management.
  2. Clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power for every root hub.
  3. Open Control Panel > Power Options, choose Change plan settings, then Change advanced power settings. Under USB settings, set USB selective suspend setting to Disabled for battery and plugged-in modes.
  4. On a desktop that was recently moved or opened, remember that front USB ports rely on an internal motherboard header cable.

Still dead?

Check that USB is not disabled in BIOS

Restart and enter BIOS or UEFI setup, commonly with Del or F2 during startup. Look under an advanced, onboard devices, or integrated peripherals section and confirm USB controllers are enabled. Changing BIOS settings is reversible, but proceed carefully and at your own risk.

Check desktop front-panel headers

If only the front USB ports failed after moving the case or working inside it, the internal USB header cable may be loose. Shut down, unplug the PC, use static-safety precautions, and reseat the cable only if you are comfortable opening the case.

When the controller has failed

If every USB port remains dead after driver resets, power changes, and BIOS checks, the motherboard USB controller may have failed, sometimes after a surge. For desktop PCs, a PCIe USB expansion card is often cheaper than replacing the motherboard.
