
You have heard undervolting can lower temperatures and fan noise without reducing performance, and you want to understand it before changing CPU or GPU settings. This applies to many modern Intel and AMD CPUs and NVIDIA or AMD GPUs, though some laptops block voltage control.
Does This Affect You?
Undervolting reduces the voltage a chip uses at a given clock speed. Because heat is closely tied to voltage, a stable undervolt can lower temperatures, quiet fans, and sometimes improve sustained laptop performance by reducing thermal throttling.
Undervolting is a software or BIOS setting, not a physical modification. It is reversible, but going too far can cause crashes or failed boots. Change values gradually and test after every step. We provide no warranty; proceed at your own risk.
What Undervolting Actually Does
Manufacturers leave safety margin because individual chips vary.
- Every CPU or GPU needs enough voltage to run reliably at a given speed.
- Factory voltage includes extra margin so all chips of that model work reliably.
- Many individual chips can run the same speed at slightly lower voltage.
- Less voltage usually means less heat, often several degrees lower under load, though results vary.
- Undervolting does not raise maximum speed like overclocking. The goal is the same speed with less power and heat.
The Basic Process
Use small changes and stability tests.
- For Intel CPUs, use Intel XTU where supported and start with a small negative core voltage offset such as -25mV to -50mV.
- For AMD CPUs, use Ryzen Master or Curve Optimizer on supported Ryzen systems.
- For NVIDIA GPUs, use MSI Afterburner and adjust the voltage/frequency curve instead of only one global number.
- For AMD GPUs, use AMD Adrenalin Performance Tuning and its undervolt controls.
- After each change, stress test for at least 15 to 20 minutes with Cinebench, a demanding game, or a GPU load test.
- If the system crashes or shows visual glitches, return to the last stable setting. Save a profile only after stability is confirmed.
Laptops often benefit more because cooling is physically limited. Still, two chips with the same model name can tolerate different undervolts, so do not copy someone else fixed number blindly. The stability-testing process is how you find your chip own limit.
Some business laptops and newer platforms lock undervolting because of stability or security restrictions related to vulnerabilities such as Plundervolt. If XTU or Ryzen Master cannot apply changes, firmware may be blocking it. A simpler alternative is setting a power limit, which can also reduce heat and noise with less tuning.
