Your external monitor flickers, flashes, dims briefly, or cuts to black and comes back. This applies to HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, and USB-C monitors connected to Windows PCs or Macs. Laptop built-in screen flicker is a different path.
Does This Affect You?
Most external monitor flicker is caused by a loose cable, weak cable, refresh-rate mismatch, graphics driver conflict, or power behavior. The panel itself is less often the first cause.
Check and Replace the Cable
A loose or damaged cable is the top cause.
- Unplug the video cable at both ends and reconnect it firmly.
- Inspect for kinks, bent pins, loose connectors, or visible damage.
- Try a shorter or higher-quality HDMI or DisplayPort cable. Long inexpensive cables are more prone to signal loss.
- Try another port on the monitor and computer.
Fix the Refresh Rate
A monitor can flicker when asked to run at a rate it cannot sustain.
- Right-click the desktop and open Display settings.
- Open Advanced display and choose the affected monitor.
- Set the refresh rate to one supported by the monitor, often 60Hz unless it is a high-refresh model.
- Apply and confirm the change before Windows reverts.
Update or Roll Back the Graphics Driver
Use this when cable and refresh rate are correct.
Driver rollback is reversible and makes sense when flicker began immediately after an update. We provide no warranty; proceed at your own risk.
- Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the GPU, and update the driver.
- If the problem started after an update, open driver properties and choose Roll Back Driver if available.
- For NVIDIA or AMD cards, use the official NVIDIA or AMD app/site for the newest driver.
- Check Windows Optional updates for recent driver changes that match the timing.
Close overlays, screen recorders, older security tools, and games one by one if flicker appears only in certain situations. On laptops driving external monitors, compare Balanced and power-saving modes. Finally, test the monitor on another device with the same cable; flicker that follows the monitor points to hardware or internal power-board trouble.
