How to Control Your PC Fan Speed With Software

Your desktop fans are louder than necessary at idle and you want them to ramp up only when temperatures rise. Windows does not include a normal fan-curve editor, but desktop motherboards, cooler apps, and third-party tools can control many system fans. Laptop fan control is usually more limited.

Does This Affect You?

Most PCs use the default fan curve set by the motherboard. That curve may be conservative and noisy. Fan-control software lets you decide how fast a fan spins at different CPU or GPU temperatures so the PC stays quiet during light work and cool under real load.

Set Up Free Fan Control Software

FanControl is a popular free, open-source option that works with many desktop motherboards.

  1. Download FanControl from its official GitHub page and install or run it.
  2. Open the app and let it detect motherboard fan headers, fan speed sensors, CPU temperature, GPU temperature, and other available sensors.
  3. Open Fan Curves, add a curve, name it, and choose a trigger such as CPU temperature or GPU temperature.
  4. Add curve points on the graph. For example, keep fans quiet below 40C, rise gradually through 40C to 70C, and approach full speed above 80C.
  5. Under fan controls, assign each detected physical fan to the curve that makes sense for its job.
  6. Use the PC normally for a day, then adjust the curve if load temperatures are higher or noise is still annoying.

Use Motherboard, Cooler, or Laptop Manufacturer Software

Hardware-specific software can be better when it understands your exact board, pump, RGB controller, or laptop thermal modes.

  • Desktop motherboard apps include ASUS Armoury Crate/Fan Xpert, MSI Center, Gigabyte Control Center, and ASRock utilities. They usually offer fan-curve editors tied to motherboard headers.
  • AIO liquid coolers often work best in their own apps, such as Corsair iCUE, NZXT CAM, or Lian Li L-Connect, because pumps and radiator fans may use cooler-specific sensors.
  • Laptop fan settings are usually limited to modes such as Quiet, Balanced, Performance, or Turbo in apps like Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, HP Command Center, or Dell Power Manager.
  • Run only one fan-control utility for the same headers. Two tools fighting over fan speeds can cause sudden ramps or erratic behavior.

BIOS/UEFI also usually has fan settings under names such as Q-Fan, Smart Fan, or Hardware Monitor. BIOS curves work before Windows loads, but they are less convenient to tune and usually cannot react to GPU temperature as flexibly as software. Adjusting fan curves is generally reversible, but avoid changing voltage or overclocking settings while you are there. We provide no warranty; proceed at your own risk.

As a broad target, many consumer systems are comfortable with CPU load temperatures below about 80C and GPU load temperatures below about 85C, though exact safe ranges vary by chip. If software cannot control a fan, it may be plugged into a simple hub, RGB controller, or a motherboard header that does not support speed control.

If fan speed keeps ignoring the curve, make sure the control software is still running or installed as a service. A failing temperature sensor, incorrect sensor source, or motherboard safety override can also force fans to run faster than your curve.
