
Your display looks too blue, too warm, washed out, or inconsistent with prints and other screens. This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 laptops and external monitors using the free calibration tool included with Windows.
Does This Affect You?
No two monitors leave the factory looking exactly the same, and backlights also shift as displays age. Calibration adjusts gamma, brightness, contrast, and color balance so the screen is closer to neutral. It is useful for photo work, video work, matching two monitors, or simply making a display look less harsh.
Calibrate with Windows Built-In Tool
This is free and good enough for everyday correction, though it depends on your eyes rather than a measuring sensor.
- Open Start, search for calibrate display color, and launch it. You can also press Windows+R, type dccw, and press Enter.
- Click Next through the introduction.
- For Gamma, adjust the slider until the sample dots blend as closely as possible with the background.
- For Brightness, use the physical buttons or on-screen display on the monitor. Adjust until dark detail is visible without making black areas look gray.
- For Contrast, use the monitor controls again and follow the sample image so bright details remain visible.
- For Color balance, move the red, green, and blue sliders until the gray bars look neutral instead of tinted.
- Use the comparison between previous and current calibration. Click Finish to save the new profile.
Windows calibration is a meaningful improvement over random factory settings, but it cannot measure actual color output. If your work depends on color accuracy, such as professional photo editing, video grading, or print proofing, use a hardware colorimeter like a Datacolor Spyder or Calibrite/X-Rite device. Those tools read the monitor with a sensor and create a more accurate profile automatically.
For two monitors, run calibration separately on each display. Windows can apply a different profile per monitor. Some difference is still normal when the screens are different models, use different panels, or have aged differently, but calibration reduces the mismatch.
To remove a bad custom profile, open Control Panel, search for Color Management, select the monitor on the Devices tab, and remove the custom profile assigned to it. For best consistency, let the display warm up for 20 to 30 minutes before calibrating, especially on older LCD monitors.
