
External SSDs and HDDs both plug in over USB and appear as drives, but they behave very differently. The real choice comes down to speed, durability, noise, heat, capacity, and cost per terabyte.

Key Differences
- Speed: external SSDs are much faster, often hundreds to thousands of MB/s, while external HDDs are commonly around 100 to 160 MB/s.
- Durability: SSDs have no moving parts, so they handle travel and bumps better. HDDs use spinning platters that are vulnerable during drops.
- Noise and heat: HDDs can spin, click lightly, and warm up. SSDs are silent and usually cooler.
- Price per gigabyte: HDDs are much cheaper at high capacities, especially 4 TB and above.
Choose an SSD If
- You edit video or large files directly from the drive.
- You travel with the drive often.
- You want a fast everyday working drive.
- You run games or portable apps from the drive.
- You value silence and shock resistance.
Choose an HDD If
- You need the most storage for the money.
- The drive is mainly for backups or archives.
- You will rarely open the files.
- You need 4 TB or more on a tighter budget.
Practical Buying Notes
A fast SSD can still be slowed by an old USB port or cable, so check the computer port speed too. Larger desktop external drives may need their own power adapter and are less portable. No external drive is a complete backup by itself; keep at least two copies of irreplaceable files, ideally with one off-site or in cloud storage.
