One UI is Samsung custom interface layered on top of Android. It is why a Galaxy phone has Samsung-style settings, apps, notifications, and features even though it still runs Android underneath.

Android vs One UI
- Android is the underlying operating system developed by Google.
- One UI is Samsung interface and feature layer on top of Android.
- One UI changes Settings layout, Quick Settings, notifications, bundled apps, and Samsung-specific tools.
- Other brands do similar things with their own interfaces, while Pixel stays closer to Google stock Android.
Where You Notice One UI
- Settings includes Samsung sections such as Advanced features and Battery and device care.
- Quick Settings and notifications use Samsung layout and controls.
- Samsung apps such as Notes, Health, Internet, Galaxy Store, and SmartThings may be preinstalled.
- Exclusive features include DeX, Secure Folder, Edge Panels, Good Lock, Bixby, and Samsung Modes and Routines.
Version Numbers
One UI version numbers do not always match Android version numbers. A feature update such as One UI 6.1 can still be based on the same Android generation underneath. Use Software information to see both numbers.
Why Galaxy Updates Arrive After Pixel
Google builds Android first, then Samsung adapts One UI, adds features, tests carriers and models, and releases it across many devices. That extra work is why Pixel often receives new Android versions earlier.
Can You Remove One UI?
Not fully. You can install a different launcher to change the Home Screen and app drawer, but Settings, notifications, Samsung system apps, and core features remain One UI underneath. Samsung also uses One UI designs on Galaxy Tabs and One UI Watch on Galaxy Watches.
