Google Play Services is not a normal app you open. It is a shared background layer that many Android apps use for location, notifications, Google sign-in, security scanning, and other Google-connected functions.
These details apply to Android phones sold with Google apps, including Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and most other mainstream Android phones outside markets where Google apps are not included.

What Google Play Services Does
- Provides shared background tools other apps borrow instead of building their own.
- Handles location calculations for many maps, weather, delivery, and ride apps.
- Receives push notification signals for many apps when they are not open.
- Supports Sign in with Google and other account features.
- Works with Google Play Protect security scanning.
- Updates some Google components quietly without a full app update.
Why It Shows Battery or Data Use
Play Services often appears high in usage lists because it is doing work for many apps at once. That does not automatically mean it is wasting resources; it may be carrying location, sync, or notification work requested by other apps.
Play Store vs Play Services
The Play Store is the app you open to browse and install apps. Google Play Services is the background framework those apps use after they are installed. They appear separately in Settings and update separately.
Do Not Disable It
Disabling Google Play Services can break location, notifications, Google sign-in, Play Protect, and many non-Google apps. If it seems stuck, clear its cache instead: Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > Storage > Clear cache.
Permissions Are Broad for a Reason
Because Play Services performs work for many apps, broad permissions such as location, network, and background activity can be normal. Treat it differently from a single-purpose app asking for the same access.
