A frozen Samsung Galaxy Tab is usually a software lockup, especially after long video, gaming, or multitasking sessions. A force restart is safe and fixes most cases without deleting anything.
These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy Tab S, Tab A, Tab Active, and other One UI tablets.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the tablet is stuck on one screen, ignores taps, or the buttons appear not to respond.
Force Restart the Tablet
- Press and hold Power or Side key with Volume Down.
- Keep holding for 10 to 15 seconds.
- Ignore the frozen display while holding.
- Release when the Samsung logo appears.
- Let the tablet boot normally.
If the display stays completely black, troubleshoot it like a device that will not turn on: charge, test the cable, and inspect the charging port.
Charge and Test Safe Mode
- Plug the tablet into its charger for at least 15 minutes.
- If it boots but freezes again, restart it.
- When the Samsung logo appears, press and hold Volume Down until startup finishes.
- Look for Safe Mode in the corner.
- Use the tablet with only built-in apps running.
- If it does not freeze in Safe Mode, uninstall recently added apps after restarting normally.
Factory Reset Only as a Last Resort
A factory reset erases apps, photos, files, accounts, and settings. Back up first if the tablet responds enough to do so.
- If Settings works, go to General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- If Settings cannot open, power the tablet off, then hold Volume Up and Power to enter Recovery.
- Use volume buttons to highlight Wipe data/factory reset and Power to select.
- Confirm and wait for the tablet to erase and restart.
Prevent Repeat Freezes
- Free storage if the tablet is nearly full.
- Install pending software updates.
- Remove the case and close background apps during heavy games, video, or charging if heat seems involved.
