A Samsung Camera app that opens to a black screen, freezes, or shows Camera failed is usually stuck software rather than a broken lens. Start with simple app and restart fixes before assuming hardware damage.
These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets running recent One UI versions.

Use this if Camera opens and closes, shows a black preview, spins forever, or says it cannot connect to the camera.
Force Close Camera
- Open Recent Apps by swiping up and pausing, or tapping the overview button.
- Find the Camera card.
- Swipe it away to close it.
- Wait about 10 seconds.
- Open Camera again from the Home Screen or app drawer.
Restart the Phone
- Hold the Side button, or Side plus Volume Down on some models.
- Tap Restart.
- After the phone boots, unlock it and open Camera again.
Restarting resets camera drivers and releases apps that may be holding the camera in the background.
Clear Camera Cache and Data
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap Camera.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache, then test Camera.
- If needed, return and tap Clear data.
Clearing Camera data resets Camera settings such as photo ratio and defaults, but it does not delete saved photos from Gallery.
Update and Check App Conflicts
- Open Settings > Software update > Download and install. Samsung often ships camera fixes in One UI updates.
- Review Settings > Apps > Permission manager > Camera and remove access from apps you do not trust.
- Boot Safe Mode if the camera works only sometimes. If Camera works in Safe Mode, uninstall recently added apps.
When It May Be Hardware
If Camera is black or frozen in every app, including Safe Mode, and the phone was dropped or got wet, the camera module may need repair through Samsung Support or an authorized service center.
