Nearby Share Not Working on Android: How to Fix It

Nearby Share, now branded Quick Share on many phones, should send files to another nearby Android device without cables or cloud upload. When the other phone does not appear, the issue is usually visibility, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or distance.

These steps apply to Android phones and tablets with Google Play Services, including Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other Android brands.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if the receiving device never appears, the transfer stalls, or sharing fails partway through.

Check Visibility on Both Devices

1. On the receiving phone, open Quick Settings and touch and hold Nearby Share or Quick Share.
2. Open Device visibility.
3. Set visibility to Everyone or Everyone for 5 minutes while transferring.
4. Avoid Hidden or No one during the transfer.
5. Repeat on the sending phone.
6. Try the share again.

Turn On Required Radios

1. Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
2. Turn on Wi-Fi on both devices. They do not always need the same network, but Wi-Fi must be enabled.
3. On Android 12 and older, turn on Location because discovery may require it. Android 13 and newer generally does not.
4. Toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and back on if they were already enabled.

Fix Failed or Frozen Transfers

1. Move the devices within about three feet or one meter.
2. Remove them from pockets or thick cases during testing.
3. Open Settings > Apps and find Nearby Share, Quick Share, or Google Play services depending on the phone.
4. Clear cache. Avoid Clear data unless needed because it resets preferences.
5. Restart both devices and try again.

Nearby Share Notes

Contacts Only Really Means Contacts

If visibility is limited to Contacts only, new people or unsaved numbers may not see the device. Use Everyone temporarily and switch back afterward.

Internet Is Not Required

Nearby Share uses Bluetooth discovery and Wi-Fi Direct-style transfer. Router or mobile data problems are usually not the cause.

Samsung May Say Quick Share

Newer Galaxy phones use Quick Share branding, but they can still share with Pixel and other Android phones when both sides are visible.
