How to Turn On One-Handed Mode on Android

Android one-handed mode illustration

One-handed mode temporarily shrinks the screen so top buttons, menus, and icons are easier to reach with one thumb. It is especially helpful on large phones and foldables used one-handed.

These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy phones with One UI and other Android phones that include one-handed or reachability-style gestures.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if you cannot comfortably reach the top of the screen without shifting your grip or using your other hand.

Turn On One-Handed Mode on Samsung

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Tap One-handed mode.
  4. Turn it on.
  5. Choose a trigger: swipe down from the bottom edge, or double-tap Home if you use button navigation.
  6. Use the trigger to shrink the screen.
  7. Tap outside the small window to return to full size.

Turn It On on Other Android Phones

  1. Open Settings > System > Gestures.
  2. Look for One-handed mode, Reachability, or similar.
  3. Turn it on if available.
  4. Trigger it by swiping down along the bottom gesture area.
  5. Swipe up or tap outside the shrunken area to restore full size.

Useful One-Handed Mode Notes

Move the Window

Look for an arrow on the side of the shrunken screen. Tapping it moves the window to the other corner for left-hand or right-hand use.

Timeout Settings

Samsung may offer a timeout that returns the screen to full size after a period of inactivity. Check One-handed mode settings if it closes too soon or stays too long.

Some Apps Ignore It

Games, camera views, and full-screen video apps may stay full size. That is app behavior, not necessarily a phone problem.

Not Every Phone Has It

If the setting is missing, check for a phone update or a similarly named accessibility gesture. Third-party launchers can add similar behavior, but they require extra trust.
