TalkBack is Android screen reader accessibility mode. When it is on, the phone reads items aloud, a single tap selects, and a double-tap opens. That change can make the phone feel broken if TalkBack was enabled by accident.
These steps apply to Android phones with TalkBack, including Samsung Galaxy phones where older versions may call it Voice Assistant.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your phone is speaking everything on screen, taps no longer open items normally, or swiping behaves differently than usual.
Turn Off TalkBack in Settings
- Open Settings. If TalkBack is active, tap once to select Settings, then double-tap to open it.
- Go to Accessibility.
- Open TalkBack. On Samsung, check the Vision section or look for Voice Assistant on older models.
- Select the main TalkBack switch.
- Double-tap to activate it, then confirm Turn off or OK.
While TalkBack is on, remember the rhythm: tap once to select, then double-tap to activate. Swipe left or right to move between items.
Use the Volume Key Shortcut
- Press and hold Volume up and Volume down together for about three seconds.
- If the shortcut is enabled, TalkBack turns off and you hear confirmation.
- If nothing happens, use Settings instead, then enable the shortcut later if you want an emergency off switch.
Stop Accidental TalkBack Triggers
If TalkBack keeps turning on in a pocket or bag, open Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack, open TalkBack settings, and turn off the Volume key shortcut. After that, TalkBack must be enabled manually from settings.
Other Ways to Recover
If menus are difficult and Google Assistant is already listening, try saying, Hey Google, turn off TalkBack. On some Samsung phones, Voice Assistant behaves almost the same and is disabled under Settings > Accessibility > Vision.
