A good Android backup protects you from loss, damage, theft, failed updates, and phone upgrades. Android can back up device data through your Google account, while Google Photos handles photos and videos separately.
These steps apply to Android phones signed into a Google account, including Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other brands.

Use this if you want contacts, photos, apps, text messages, settings, and important files recoverable if something happens to the phone.
Turn On Automatic Google Backup
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google, or on some phones Accounts and backup > Google.
- Tap Backup.
- Turn on Back up to Google Drive or the current Google backup option.
- Check the Google account shown at the top. Make sure it is an account you can access.
- Tap Back up now if you want an immediate backup.
- Confirm the last backup date after it finishes.
Google backup can include contacts, call history, SMS, app data where supported, device settings, and more. It usually runs automatically when the phone is charging, on Wi-Fi, and idle.
Back Up Photos and Videos
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Photos settings.
- Tap Backup or Back up & sync.
- Turn backup on.
- Choose Storage saver or Original quality.
- Choose whether mobile data backup is allowed.
Photo backup is separate from the general Android backup. Check it directly because photos and videos are often the files people care about most.
Make a Manual Computer Copy
- Connect the phone to a Windows PC or Mac with a USB cable.
- On the phone, choose File transfer from the USB notification.
- On Windows, open the phone in File Explorer.
- On Mac, use Android File Transfer or the current supported transfer tool for your setup.
- Copy the DCIM folder and any other important folders to the computer.
Backup Notes
Some Apps Back Up Separately
Messaging apps such as WhatsApp may have their own backup settings. Check each important app so chat history or local files are not missed.
Restoring to a New Phone
During setup on a new Android phone, sign in with the same Google account and choose the recent backup. Apps, settings, contacts, and supported data can restore from there.
Photos Return Through Google Photos
Once you sign into Google Photos with the same account, backed-up photos and videos appear there without needing a device restore.
