How to Back Up a Samsung Phone With Smart Switch and Samsung Cloud

Backing up a Samsung Galaxy phone illustration

Samsung Galaxy phones can use Google backup, Samsung Cloud, and Smart Switch. Samsung Cloud is useful for automatic Samsung-specific backup, while Smart Switch is better for a one-time full copy to a computer or a new Samsung phone.

These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy phones running One UI. Smart Switch works for Windows, Mac, and phone-to-phone transfers.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if you want Samsung’s own backup tools in addition to or instead of Google backup. They can preserve some Samsung-specific settings, app data, and layouts that generic Android backup may not capture.

Turn On Samsung Cloud Backup

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts and backup.
  3. Tap Back up data, or open Samsung Cloud > Back up data.
  4. Review the items listed, such as contacts, calendar, settings, Home Screen layout, and Samsung app data.
  5. Turn off anything you do not want included.
  6. Tap Back up and wait for it to finish.
  7. Confirm Auto back up is on if you want future automatic backups.

Use Smart Switch for a Computer Backup

  1. Download Smart Switch from Samsung on your Windows PC or Mac.
  2. Install and open Smart Switch.
  3. Connect the Samsung phone with a USB cable.
  4. Allow the connection on the phone if prompted.
  5. Click Backup in Smart Switch.
  6. Choose content types and start the backup.
  7. Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting.

The Smart Switch backup lives on the computer. Keep that computer or an external copy safe if you expect to restore from it later.

Restore or Transfer Later

To restore from a computer backup, connect the phone to Smart Switch and choose Restore. To move to a new Samsung phone, open Smart Switch during setup or afterward and choose to receive data from the old phone over cable or Wi-Fi.

Backup Notes

Samsung Cloud Has Limits

Samsung Cloud storage can fill, especially if large items are included. Manage old backups under Accounts and backup or use Google Photos for photo and video backup.

Google Backup Still Helps

Using Samsung backup does not prevent Google backup. Many people use both so contacts, apps, settings, and photos have more than one recovery path.

Secure Folder Needs Attention

Secure Folder is separate by design. Confirm its own backup settings if you store important files or apps inside it.
