When Gmail stops syncing on Android, the messages are usually still safe on Google servers. The phone simply is not pulling them down because sync is off, background activity is restricted, storage is full, or the app connection is stuck.
These steps apply to the Gmail app on Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and similar Android phones.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if new mail appears on a computer but not in the Android Gmail app, or Gmail only updates after you open it manually.
Refresh and Check Gmail Sync
- Open Gmail.
- Pull down from the top of the inbox to refresh manually.
- Tap your profile picture and choose the affected account if you use more than one.
- Open the menu, tap Settings, then tap the email address.
- Make sure Sync Gmail is on.
- Check Days of mail to sync if older messages are missing.
Check Android Account Sync
- Open phone Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup, Passwords and accounts, or similar.
- Choose your Google account.
- Open account sync settings.
- Make sure Gmail is enabled.
- Use Sync now if available.
Stop Battery Saving from Blocking Gmail
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap Gmail.
- Tap Battery.
- Set battery usage to Unrestricted.
- On Samsung, also check sleeping or deep sleeping apps under Background usage limits.
- Restart the phone and wait a few minutes.
This is especially common on Samsung phones where background limits can stop Gmail from checking for mail until the app opens.
If Gmail Still Will Not Sync
Check Google Storage
Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos share Google account storage. If it is full, new mail can fail or sync oddly. Check one.google.com/storage.
Check Data Saver
If Android Data Saver is on, allow Gmail unrestricted background data so it can sync on mobile data.
Remove and Re-Add One Account
If only one Gmail account is affected, remove that Google account from Android settings and add it again. The email remains on Google servers.
Reset Gmail App
Clear Gmail cache and storage or reinstall the app. You may need to sign in again, but email stored in Gmail is not deleted from the server.
