Low storage can stop photos, block updates, slow apps, and increase crashes. The right cleanup starts with Android storage tools so you can see what is actually taking space instead of deleting files randomly.
These steps apply to Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and similar Android phones running recent Android versions.

Use this if storage warnings appear, apps open slowly, updates fail, or the camera cannot save new photos.
Use the Built-In Cleanup Tool
- Open Settings > Storage, or Samsung Battery and device care > Storage.
- Review categories such as Apps, Photos and videos, Documents, Downloads, and Cached data.
- Tap a category to see large items.
- Use Clean now or Free up space if your phone offers it.
- Review suggested files before deleting anything.
Built-in cleanup is safer than third-party cleaner apps because it shows what will be removed before you confirm.
Back Up Photos and Remove Local Copies
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Confirm Backup is on and complete.
- Open Photos settings if needed and find Free up space or Free up device storage.
- Remove local copies that are already backed up to your Google account.
The photos remain available in Google Photos after local copies are removed, as long as backup completed successfully.
Uninstall Apps You Do Not Use
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Sort by size if the option exists.
- Review large games, streaming apps, and apps you have not opened in months.
- Tap an unused app.
- Tap Uninstall.
Other Space Wins
Clear Cache
Clear cached data from Storage or from individual app storage screens. Cache clearing removes temporary files that rebuild later.
Empty Trash
Google Photos and Samsung Gallery keep deleted photos in Trash for about 30 to 60 days. Empty Trash only after confirming you do not need those items.
Check Downloads and Messaging Folders
Use the Files app to review Downloads and folders from apps like WhatsApp or Messages. Old videos and documents often hide there.
Use microSD If Supported
Some phones still support microSD cards for media storage. If your model has one, check Storage settings for options to move photos or supported files.
