Android Phone Charging Slowly: How to Fix It

Fixing slow Android charging illustration

Slow Android charging is usually caused by the cable, charger, port, or power source rather than the phone itself. A cable can look fine while failing to carry enough power for fast charging.

These steps apply to Android phones with USB-C charging, including Samsung Galaxy phones with Fast Charging or Super Fast Charging.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if your phone now takes hours to charge, no longer says fast charging, or gains battery very slowly with the charger you normally use.

Check the Cable and Charger

  1. Try a different USB-C cable, preferably one rated for fast charging.
  2. Check the charger wattage printed on the adapter. Many modern phones need at least 18 W for fast charging, and Samsung Super Fast Charging usually needs 25 W or more with the right cable.
  3. Use a wall charger instead of a laptop USB port or basic hub.
  4. Try a different wall outlet.
  5. Test your charger and cable with another phone, or test your phone with a known-good charger.

If another charger fixes the speed immediately, the old cable or adapter was the limit.

Clean the Port and Reduce Background Drain

  1. Look inside the USB-C port with a flashlight.
  2. Power off the phone.
  3. Gently clean lint or dust with a dry, soft brush or careful compressed air. Do not insert metal or sharp objects.
  4. Open Battery settings and check whether heavy apps are running while charging.
  5. Stop gaming, video streaming, navigation, or hotspot use while charging.
  6. Turn on Airplane Mode as a test. If charging speeds up, weak signal or background activity was part of the drain.

Check Charging Settings

Fast Charging Toggle

On Samsung, open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > More battery settings and make sure Fast charging is enabled.

Battery Protection

Battery protection or charge limit settings can slow or stop charging around 80 to 85 percent to reduce wear. That is expected behavior if the setting is on.

Battery Age

If charging became slower over months and battery life also dropped, the battery may be aging. Samsung Members and some manufacturer tools can check battery condition.

Heat Slows Charging

Phones slow charging when hot. Remove thick cases, keep the phone out of sun, and avoid heavy use while plugged in.
