When Android notifications stop appearing, the cause is usually a disabled app notification setting, Do Not Disturb, battery optimization, or blocked background data. The phone is often receiving messages only when you open the app manually.
These steps apply to Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and similar phones running recent Android versions.

Use this if texts, email, chat alerts, or app notifications no longer show banners, play sounds, vibrate, or appear in the status bar.
Check Notifications for the App
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Tap App notifications or open the app list.
- Choose the app that is not alerting you.
- Turn on the main notification switch.
- Open notification categories or channels for that app.
- Make sure the categories you need are enabled, set to make sound, and allowed to show as banners or pop-ups.
Messaging and email apps often have several notification categories. The main switch can be on while one important category is set to silent.
Turn Off Do Not Disturb
- Swipe down to open Quick Settings.
- Look for the crescent moon or Do Not Disturb icon.
- Tap it off if it is highlighted.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb.
- Check schedules such as Sleep, Work, or Driving and disable or adjust ones you do not want.
Remove Battery Restrictions
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Choose the app missing notifications.
- Tap Battery or Battery usage.
- Change the setting from Restricted or Optimized to Unrestricted.
- Repeat for messaging, email, alarm, or security apps where instant alerts matter.
Battery optimization can stop an app from checking in the background, so alerts appear only after you open the app.
Other Notification Checks
Muted Conversations
Inside messaging apps, check whether one chat or contact is muted. A single muted conversation can look like app-wide notification failure.
Background Data
Open the app info screen and check Mobile data or Data usage. Allow background data if the app needs to receive alerts away from Wi-Fi.
Restart
Restart the phone to clear stuck notification services or background processes after settings look correct.
System Updates
Check Android or Samsung software updates. Notification bugs are common after major updates and often fixed in later point releases.
