Android Mobile Data Not Working: How to Get Your Connection Back

Fixing Android mobile data illustration

Full signal bars do not always mean mobile data is working. The phone can be connected to the cellular network while data is blocked by a setting, APN problem, carrier outage, SIM issue, or account provisioning problem.

These steps apply to Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and similar Android phones on major carriers.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if apps spin forever, browsers do not load, or the data icon shows an X or exclamation mark even though the phone has signal.

Toggle Airplane Mode

  1. Swipe down from the top to open Quick Settings.
  2. Tap Airplane mode to turn it on.
  3. Wait about 15 seconds.
  4. Tap Airplane mode again to turn it off.
  5. Wait for the phone to reconnect, then test a browser or app.

This refreshes the cellular connection and is the fastest fix for many temporary data failures.

Check Mobile Data and Data Limits

  1. Open Quick Settings and make sure Mobile data is on.
  2. Open Settings > Connections > Data usage on Samsung, or Network & internet > SIMs on Pixel.
  3. Look for a data warning or data limit.
  4. If the limit has paused data, raise it or turn it off.
  5. Check whether Data Saver is restricting the affected app.

Reset APN Settings

  1. Open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks on Samsung, or Network & internet > SIMs on Pixel.
  2. Tap Access Point Names.
  3. Open the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Reset to default.
  5. Restart the phone and test mobile data again.

The APN tells the phone how to connect to your carrier data network. If it is missing or wrong, calls may work while data does not.

If Data Still Fails

Check Carrier Outages

Use Wi-Fi or another device to check your carrier app or outage page. If the network is down locally, phone resets will not fix it.

Reseat the SIM

Power off the phone, remove the SIM tray, reseat the SIM card, and power back on. A slightly loose SIM can cause intermittent data trouble.

Reset Network Settings

Use Samsung General management > Reset > Reset network settings, or Pixel System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. You will need to reconnect Wi-Fi afterward.

Ask the Carrier to Re-Provision

If all phone settings look right, the carrier may need to refresh the line, SIM, or account provisioning from their side.
