Why Is My iPhone Battery Draining So Fast? How to Fix It

Fixing fast iPhone battery drain illustration

Fast battery drain does not always mean the battery is worn out. A single app, background location tracking, weak cellular signal, high brightness, or a stuck system process can drain the phone much faster than normal.

These steps apply to recent iPhones, including older models running iOS 17 or iOS 18.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if your iPhone loses power much faster than before, drops 10 percent or more in light use, or barely lasts half a day without an obvious change in your habits.

Find the App Using the Battery

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Wait for Battery Usage by App to load.
  3. Review which apps use the highest percentage.
  4. Tap Show Activity or the clock icon to compare screen use with background use.
  5. If one app shows heavy background use, update it in the App Store.
  6. If updating does not help, delete and reinstall the app or stop using it until the developer fixes the drain.

Navigation, social, fitness, camera, and video apps are common heavy users. The warning sign is high battery use when you were not actively using the app.

Cut Background Activity

  1. Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  2. Turn it off completely or disable it for apps that do not need to update while closed.
  3. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  4. Change unnecessary Always permissions to While Using the App or Never.
  5. Lower display brightness or enable Auto-Brightness under Accessibility display settings.
  6. In weak cellular areas, try Airplane Mode briefly or switch 5G to LTE if 5G is not needed.

The screen and cellular radio are two of the biggest power users. Weak signal can drain the battery because the iPhone works harder to stay connected.

Restart and Install Updates

  1. Restart the iPhone.
  2. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  3. Install pending updates.
  4. Give the phone a day of normal use after restarting or updating before judging battery statistics.

A stuck download, failed update process, or frozen background task can drain power until a restart or update clears it.

If Drain Continues

Check Battery Health

Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If Maximum Capacity is below 80 percent, a battery replacement is often the real fix.

Optimized Battery Charging Is Not Drain

Optimized Battery Charging may pause charging near 80 percent to reduce wear. It does not make the battery drain faster, though it can explain why the phone was not at 100 percent when unplugged.

Replace a Worn Battery

If the iPhone is several years old, shuts down unexpectedly, or has low Maximum Capacity, settings changes cannot restore lost physical capacity. Apple or an authorized provider can replace the battery.

Reset All Settings

If nothing explains the drain, back up first, then use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This resets settings, not your apps or data.
