A screen recording can save perfectly but play back silently if the microphone was off, media volume was down, or the app blocks audio capture. The microphone setting has to be chosen before the recording starts.
These steps apply to the built-in iPhone Screen Recording tool in Control Center on recent iOS versions, including iOS 17 and iOS 18.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your screen recording has no app sound, no narration, or no sound at all. The fix is usually one Control Center setting, but some apps intentionally prevent recording audio.
Turn On Microphone Audio Before Recording
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner. On a Home button iPhone, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Touch and hold the Screen Recording button. Do not just tap it, because tapping starts recording immediately.
- Tap the microphone icon so it turns red.
- Tap Start Recording.
- Wait for the three-second countdown.
- Record what you need.
- Tap the red status area or return to Control Center and tap Stop.
Turning the microphone on after the recording starts will not add audio to the part already captured. If the recording is silent, you usually need to record it again.
Check Mute, Volume, and Focus
- Check the Ring/Silent switch or Action Button behavior. Some apps respect silent mode for their own audio.
- Press Volume Up during recording and during playback to make sure media volume is not at zero.
- Open Control Center and check whether a Focus mode is active. Focus mostly affects alerts, but custom settings can change what you hear.
- Play the recording again from Photos with volume turned up before deciding the audio is missing.
Rule Out an App That Blocks Audio Capture
- Try recording another app, such as Camera, a simple webpage, or a non-protected video.
- If audio records elsewhere but not in one specific app, that app may block capture deliberately.
- Streaming, banking, and DRM-protected apps can prevent audio or video recording.
- Look for the app’s own export, download, share, or reporting feature if you need a copy of that content.
There is no iPhone setting that overrides an app blocking protected audio capture.

Where Recordings Save
Screen recordings save to Photos, usually in Recents and in the Screen Recordings album under Albums. Check both places if you cannot find the file.
Editing Cannot Add Missing Audio
Photos can trim the beginning and end of a screen recording, but it cannot restore audio that was never captured. Re-record with the correct microphone setting.
The Microphone Setting Is Remembered
Control Center remembers the last microphone choice for Screen Recording. Check it each time if you sometimes want narration and sometimes want a silent recording.
