No Service or Searching means your iPhone is not connected to the cellular network. Calls, SMS, and cellular data may fail even while Wi-Fi still works. In many cases the cause is a stuck radio connection, SIM or eSIM issue, carrier settings, or an account problem.
These steps apply to iPhones with physical SIM or eSIM on major carriers, running recent iOS versions such as iOS 17 or iOS 18.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your carrier name and signal bars disappeared, especially if other people nearby have service. Most cases are fixable without repair, so start with connection and SIM checks.
Toggle Airplane Mode and Restart
- Open Control Center.
- Tap the Airplane Mode button to turn it on.
- Wait about 15 seconds.
- Tap Airplane Mode again to turn it off.
- Watch the status bar while the iPhone searches for the network.
- If service does not return, restart the iPhone, wait 30 seconds while it is off, then turn it back on.
- Give it a full minute after restarting to reconnect.
This refreshes the iPhone cellular radio and is the fastest fix for many temporary No Service cases.
Check the SIM or eSIM
- For a physical SIM, power off the iPhone and remove the SIM tray with a SIM tool or straightened paperclip.
- Check the SIM card for dirt, damage, or a poor fit, then reinsert the tray firmly.
- Turn the iPhone back on and check for service.
- For eSIM, open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Confirm the cellular plan is listed and active.
- If the eSIM is missing or shows an error, contact the carrier for a new QR code, activation link, or profile reset.
- On Dual SIM iPhones, make sure the correct line is enabled and selected as the primary line.
Update Carrier Settings and iOS
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Wait a few seconds. If a carrier settings update appears, tap Update.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and install any iOS update.
- If No Service continues, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Carrier settings updates are separate from full iOS updates and can fix network compatibility problems.
Before Assuming Hardware
Check for an Outage
Use your carrier app, website, or another phone to check for local outages. If nearby people on the same carrier also have no service, waiting for the carrier is the real fix.
Review Roaming and Travel Settings
If the issue started after travel, check Settings > Cellular > Data Roaming. Also make sure Airplane Mode was not left on after a flight.
Check the Carrier Account
A missed payment, plan change, deactivated SIM, or transfer problem can look like a phone issue. Log into the carrier account or contact support if settings look normal.
Consider Damage
If the iPhone was dropped or exposed to liquid and every software and SIM step fails while other phones work nearby, the antenna or related hardware may need service.
