iPhone Personal Hotspot Connected but No Internet

Fixing iPhone hotspot with no internet illustration

A laptop or tablet can show full bars for your iPhone Personal Hotspot and still have no working internet. The connection between devices may be fine while the iPhone has no data to share, the carrier is limiting hotspot traffic, or the network session is stuck.

These steps apply to iPhones running recent iOS versions, including iOS 17 and iOS 18, when another device connects by Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth but cannot load pages or apps.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if another device joins your iPhone hotspot but nothing actually loads. Work through the plan, cellular, and reconnect steps in order, because hotspot problems often come from the carrier account before they come from the iPhone.

Confirm Hotspot Data Is Allowed and Available

  1. Open your carrier app or account page.
  2. Look for a hotspot, tethering, or mobile hotspot allowance. Some unlimited plans still have a separate hotspot cap.
  3. If the hotspot allowance is exhausted, expect very slow or unusable speeds even while the device still says it is connected.
  4. Confirm your plan supports Personal Hotspot at all. Some prepaid or budget plans disable it.
  5. Contact the carrier if hotspot access needs to be added, reset, or repaired on the account.

If the plan blocks hotspot data, changing iPhone settings will not fix the connection. The carrier has to allow the feature.

Check Cellular Data and Hotspot Settings

  1. Open Settings > Cellular and make sure Cellular Data is on.
  2. Open Settings > Personal Hotspot.
  3. Turn on Allow Others to Join.
  4. Check the Wi-Fi password and retype it on the connecting device if needed.
  5. Open Control Center and make sure Airplane Mode is off. Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on so devices can discover the hotspot.
  6. On the iPhone itself, open Safari and load a webpage using cellular data. If the iPhone cannot get online, the hotspot has nothing to share.

Reconnect the Other Device

  1. On the laptop or tablet, forget the iPhone hotspot network from Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Reconnect and enter the hotspot password again.
  3. On the iPhone, turn Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, then turn it off.
  4. Restart both the iPhone and the device trying to connect.
  5. If it still fails, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Reset Network Settings removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and VPN/network settings, so have your Wi-Fi password ready before using it.

Other Connection Options

Try USB Tethering

If Wi-Fi hotspot keeps failing, connect the iPhone to the computer with a cable and select the iPhone as a network interface. USB is usually steadier than Wi-Fi and charges the iPhone at the same time. Windows may need Apple device drivers installed.

Try Bluetooth for Light Use

Bluetooth tethering is slower but can use less battery than Wi-Fi. It is reasonable for email or basic browsing, not large downloads or streaming.

Watch Data Use

Hotspot traffic can use a monthly allowance quickly, especially from computers running updates, cloud sync, or video. Check usage in the carrier app or under Cellular settings.
