The Translate app helps with quick text, voice, conversation, and camera translations without installing a separate app. It is useful for travel, signs, menus, messages, and short conversations where you need a practical understanding quickly.
Translate is available on iOS 14 or later. Offline translation requires downloading the languages you want to use before you lose internet access.
Does This Affect You?
Use Translate when you need to read or say something in another language from your iPhone. Treat it as a helpful guide, not as a final authority for legal, medical, immigration, financial, or contract language.
Translate Typed or Spoken Text
- Open the Translate app.
- Choose the source language and target language at the top of the screen.
- Type the words or sentence you want translated, then submit it.
- Tap the speaker button to hear the translation read aloud.
- Tap the microphone button if you want to speak instead of type.
- Use the star button to save a translation as a favorite for later.
Short, complete sentences usually translate better than fragments full of slang, abbreviations, or mixed languages.
Use Conversation Mode
- Open Translate and choose the two languages for the conversation.
- Tap the microphone button and speak naturally.
- Let the other person speak when it is their turn.
- Use the conversation view so both translations stay visible.
- Turn the iPhone sideways for a Face to Face layout when you want each person to read from their side of the screen.
Conversation Mode works best in a quieter place. Background music, traffic, or several people speaking at once can make speech detection unreliable.
Translate Text with the Camera
- Open Translate and tap the camera option.
- Point the iPhone at a sign, menu, label, or printed text.
- Wait for the translated text to appear over the original.
- Tap the shutter or pause control to freeze the view if you need more time to read.
- You can also translate recognized text from a photo by opening the image, selecting the text, and choosing Translate.
Camera translation needs clear, readable text. Very stylized fonts, glare, folds, or blurry images can reduce accuracy.
Download Languages for Offline Use
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Translate, or open Translate settings on older iOS versions.
- Tap Downloaded Languages.
- Choose Download New Language.
- Download the languages you expect to need before traveling or going offline.
Offline translations may not support every feature or language pair. Test the languages before you rely on them away from Wi-Fi or cellular service.
