Detection Mode is a set of Magnifier tools for low-vision users. On supported Pro iPhones, it can describe nearby people, doors, furniture, and printed text using the camera and LiDAR Scanner.
People Detection and Door Detection require a Pro iPhone with LiDAR, such as iPhone 12 Pro or later Pro models, running a compatible iOS version.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you want the iPhone to announce distance to a person, locate a door, describe door details, or read text aloud through Magnifier.
Use People and Door Detection
- Open the Magnifier app.
- Tap the Detection Mode icon.
- Choose People Detection to hear distance updates for nearby people.
- Choose Door Detection to locate a door and hear details such as distance, open or closed state, handle type, and visible text or symbols.
- On supported iOS versions, use Furniture Detection if available.
- Use Detection Mode settings to choose spoken, sound, or haptic distance feedback.
Use Point and Speak
- Open Magnifier and enter Detection Mode.
- Choose Point and Speak.
- Point the camera at text and, when possible, point your finger near the text on the object.
- Listen as iPhone reads the detected text aloud.
- Move your finger to another section to read that area.
Detection Mode Notes
LiDAR Requirement
Standard non-Pro iPhones do not include the LiDAR Scanner needed for People Detection and Door Detection. Regular Magnifier zoom and filters still work on many iPhones.
Works with VoiceOver
VoiceOver reads what is on the screen. Detection Mode describes physical surroundings through the camera, so the two can complement each other.
Lighting and Angle
LiDAR and camera detection work best with a clear view. Strong sunlight, total darkness, and awkward angles can reduce accuracy.
Open Faster
Add Magnifier to Accessibility Shortcut so a triple-click of the side button opens it quickly, including from the Lock Screen.
