Wi-Fi Assist uses cellular data when Wi-Fi is too weak to keep an app working. It can make a poor connection feel smoother, but on a limited data plan it may quietly add cellular usage when you thought you were on Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi Assist has been built into iPhone since iOS 9.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if cellular usage is higher than expected even while you spend time connected to weak or unreliable Wi-Fi networks.
Turn Off Wi-Fi Assist
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.
- Turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
No restart is needed. With Wi-Fi Assist off, weak Wi-Fi stays weak instead of being silently helped by cellular data.
Check Whether Wi-Fi Assist Is the Real Cause
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Review the Cellular Data list to see usage by app.
- Turn off cellular access for apps that should never use mobile data.
- Open high-usage apps and look for data-saver or streaming-quality settings.
- At the bottom of the Cellular page, tap Reset Statistics if you want a clean comparison over the next few days.
Wi-Fi Assist Notes
It Only Helps Weak Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi Assist does not use cellular just because both radios are available. It steps in when Wi-Fi requests are failing or timing out.
Streaming Apps May Be Separate
Some audio and video apps manage their own network and quality behavior. If one streaming app uses most data, check that app’s settings too.
Limited vs Unlimited Plans
People with hard caps or overage fees may prefer Wi-Fi Assist off. On unlimited plans, the reliability benefit is often worth keeping it on.
