An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the iPhone. Instead of inserting a physical card, your carrier activates a cellular plan through a QR code, carrier app, or transfer from another iPhone.
eSIM works on iPhone XS and later, but availability and setup methods depend on the carrier and region.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you are activating a new cellular plan, moving an existing number to a new iPhone, or adding a second line for work or travel.
Set Up eSIM with a QR Code
- Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service.
- Tap Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular.
- Choose Use QR Code.
- Scan the QR code from your carrier. If scanning is not possible, tap Enter Details Manually and type the activation details.
- Follow the prompts and wait for activation.
- If using more than one line, choose default voice and cellular data lines in Cellular settings.
Use Your Carrier App
- Install your carrier’s app from the App Store.
- Sign in or start a new line.
- Look for Activate eSIM, Manage Device, or a similar option.
- Follow the app prompts.
- Check Settings > Cellular afterward to confirm the plan appears.
Transfer eSIM to a New iPhone
- Keep both iPhones nearby with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on.
- On the new iPhone, during setup or under Cellular > Add eSIM, choose transfer from a nearby iPhone.
- Select the old iPhone and follow prompts on both devices.
- Confirm transfer if the old iPhone asks.
- After completion, the old iPhone’s eSIM for that line is deactivated and the new one takes over.

Dual SIM
Many iPhones can store multiple eSIMs and use two lines at once. Label each line and choose defaults for calls, messages, and cellular data.
Old iPhone Is Gone
If the old device was erased, lost, or unavailable, contact your carrier. Most carriers can issue a fresh activation method for the replacement device.
QR Code Fails
Activation requires an internet connection. If the QR code scans but no eSIM appears, the code may already have been used and your carrier may need to generate a new one.
