How to Set Up a Sleep Schedule on iPhone

Setting up sleep schedule on iPhone illustration

The Health app can manage a bedtime, wake-up time, Wind Down period, and Sleep Focus. It can quiet notifications before bed, dim the Lock Screen, and optionally work with Apple Watch sleep tracking.

Sleep Schedule is available on iOS 14 or later and works with or without Apple Watch.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if you want the iPhone to nudge you toward a consistent schedule and handle sleep-related alarms and notification quieting automatically.

Set Up a Sleep Schedule

  1. Open the Health app.
  2. Tap Browse, then Sleep.
  3. If prompted, tap Get Started, or open Full Schedule & Options.
  4. Select the days the schedule should apply to.
  5. Drag the bedtime and wake-up points on the schedule circle, or move the whole arc to shift both.
  6. Under Alarm, choose whether Wake Up Alarm is on and set sound, volume, and Snooze.
  7. Tap Done.

Adjust or Turn Off the Schedule

  1. Open Health > Browse > Sleep.
  2. Tap Full Schedule & Options.
  3. Change selected days or drag the bedtime/wake points to new times.
  4. To skip one night, temporarily turn off Sleep Focus rather than deleting the schedule.
  5. To stop the schedule, remove its active days or disable the schedule options shown.

Sleep Schedule Extras

Wind Down

Set Wind Down in Full Schedule & Options. Sleep Focus begins at the Wind Down time, not only at bedtime, so notifications quiet earlier.

Sleep Focus

Sleep Focus can dim the Lock Screen, hold notifications, and show a simpler Home Screen if you configure one under Focus settings.

Apple Watch

If you wear an Apple Watch to bed and Sleep Tracking is enabled in the Watch app, sleep data appears in the same Sleep area of Health.

Alarm Problems

If the alarm does not behave as expected, check other Focus modes, Do Not Disturb, Health notifications, and the Wake Up Alarm settings inside the sleep schedule.
