How to Set Reminders on iPhone (Time, Location, and Recurring)

Setting reminders on iPhone illustration

Reminders can do much more than hold a plain checklist. You can set an exact alert time, trigger a reminder when arriving or leaving a place, repeat tasks automatically, add notes and priorities, share lists, and ask Siri to create reminders hands-free.

These steps use the built-in Reminders app. Location reminders require Location Services for Reminders.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if you want your iPhone to remind you at a specific time, at a place, or on a repeating schedule.

Create a Reminder with a Time

  1. Open Reminders.
  2. Choose a list or tap New Reminder.
  3. Type the task.
  4. Tap the info button beside the reminder.
  5. Turn on Date and choose the day.
  6. Turn on Time and choose the time.
  7. Tap Done.

The iPhone sends a notification at that time even if the Reminders app is closed.

Create a Location Reminder

  1. Create a reminder and open its info screen.
  2. Turn on Location.
  3. Choose a suggested place or enter an address.
  4. Select Arriving or Leaving.
  5. Tap Done.
  6. Confirm Location Services allows Reminders under Privacy & Security settings.

Set a Repeating Reminder

  1. Create the reminder and open its info screen.
  2. Turn on Date and Time for the first occurrence.
  3. Tap Repeat.
  4. Choose Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, or Custom.
  5. Set End Repeat if it should stop after a date or number of repeats.
  6. Tap Done.

Helpful Reminder Extras

Use Siri

Say something like “Remind me to call the dentist tomorrow at 9 AM,” and Siri creates the reminder with the time already set.

Add Details

The info screen can hold a URL, note, priority level, and flag so important reminders stand out.

Share a List

Open a list, tap the sharing/person icon, and invite others. Everyone who joins can add, edit, and complete reminders in that list.

Use Today and Scheduled

The Today and Scheduled views gather reminders from all lists so you do not need to check each list manually.
