An iCloud backup restore brings apps, settings, messages, and other backed-up data onto a new or erased iPhone. It is most common after replacing a phone or wiping one to fix a stubborn software problem.
These steps apply to iPhones running iOS 17 or iOS 18 restoring from an iCloud backup.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you are setting up a new iPhone, restoring after an erase, or trying to return an iPhone to a previous backed-up state. A restore replaces what is currently on the phone, so an already-used iPhone must be erased first.
Restore a New or Freshly Erased iPhone
- Turn on the iPhone and follow setup until you reach Apps & Data.
- Tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in with the Apple ID that owns the backup.
- Choose the backup by device name, date, and size.
- Stay on Wi-Fi and keep the iPhone connected to power.
- Finish setup. Apps and content continue downloading in the background after the Home Screen appears.
Erase and Restore an iPhone You Already Use
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode and Apple ID password when asked.
- After the iPhone restarts to setup, choose Restore from iCloud Backup on the Apps & Data screen.
Fix a Slow or Stuck Restore
- Use a strong Wi-Fi connection rather than cellular data.
- Keep the iPhone plugged into power.
- If a step appears frozen for more than 15 to 20 minutes, restart the iPhone and allow the restore to resume.
- Check iCloud backup details to make sure the selected backup is complete and from the correct device.

Pick the Correct Backup
If you have several Apple devices or old iPhones, compare device name and date carefully before selecting a backup.
Two-Factor Authentication
Have another trusted device or trusted phone number nearby because Apple may require a verification code during setup.
Apps Continue Later
It is normal for app icons to appear with progress rings for minutes or hours after setup. You can usually keep using the iPhone while this finishes.
What Is Not Included
Some items are not stored inside an iCloud backup, including Face ID or Touch ID data, Apple Pay cards, data already synced to iCloud, and some app login sessions.
