How to Recover Deleted Text Messages on iPhone

Recovering deleted text messages on iPhone illustration

A deleted iPhone conversation may still be recoverable if it was removed recently. Messages has a Recently Deleted area on iOS 16 and later, and older deletions may be recoverable from an iCloud or computer backup if you are willing to restore the whole iPhone.

Recently Deleted in Messages requires iOS 16 or later. Older iOS versions rely on backups.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if you deleted a conversation or message containing a number, address, confirmation, or other detail you now need back.

Check Recently Deleted in Messages

  1. Open Messages.
  2. From the conversation list, tap Edit or Filters, depending on your iOS version.
  3. Choose Show Recently Deleted.
  4. Select the conversation or message you want back.
  5. Tap Recover and confirm.

Messages and conversations stay here for about 30 days before permanent deletion.

Restore from a Backup

  1. Check the date of your iCloud backup under Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
  2. For computer backups, connect the iPhone and check backup dates in Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices.
  3. Choose a backup from before the message was deleted.
  4. For iCloud, erase the iPhone and restore from that iCloud backup during setup.
  5. For a computer backup, use Restore Backup from Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices.
  6. After the restore completes, check Messages.

Important Tradeoffs

Backups Restore the Whole Phone

Apple does not provide a normal way to pull one conversation out of a backup. Restoring a backup replaces the current phone state with the older backup, so save today’s data first if you might need it.

Carrier Limits

Carriers may have records that a text was sent or received, but they generally do not keep the actual message content for normal recovery.

Ask the Other Person

For one important message, the fastest recovery is often asking the other person to forward it or send a screenshot from their side.

Prepare for Next Time

Keep automatic iCloud Backup enabled and check Recently Deleted before assuming a deleted message is gone forever.
