Deleted iPhone photos normally move to Recently Deleted before they are erased permanently. That gives you a recovery window, but once the countdown expires, Apple’s built-in options depend on whether the photo exists in iCloud, another device, a shared album, or an older backup.
These steps apply to iOS 17 and iOS 18, with or without iCloud Photos enabled.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you accidentally deleted one photo, several photos, or an album and want the images back before the 30-day window closes.
Restore from Recently Deleted
- Open Photos.
- Tap Albums.
- Scroll to Utilities and open Recently Deleted.
- Authenticate if asked.
- Tap Select, choose the photos, or use Select All.
- Tap Recover and confirm.
Photos return to the main library and, when possible, the albums they were in. Each item shows how many days remain before permanent deletion.
Use iCloud or a Backup
- Check iCloud Photos from another device or from icloud.com/photos before restoring the whole phone.
- Check whether another Mac, iPad, or iPhone signed into the same Apple ID still has the photo.
- If the 30-day folder is empty, review iCloud or computer backups and look for one dated before the deletion.
- Restore a full backup only as a last resort because it replaces current iPhone data with the backup’s older state.
- Back up the current iPhone first if you may need anything added after that older backup.

Recovery Tools
Desktop recovery utilities sometimes claim to scan an iPhone for deleted files, but results are not reliable. Be careful with any software that asks for deep device access.
Shared Albums
If the photo was in a Shared Album, a copy may still exist there even after it is gone from your personal library.
Turn On iCloud Photos
Using iCloud Photos can make it easier to catch accidental deletion from another device before it becomes permanent everywhere.
The Countdown Matters
The days shown in Recently Deleted are the real deadline. Once the countdown reaches zero, Apple’s normal photo recovery tools cannot bring that item back.
