Duplicate contacts often appear when the same person is saved from iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, SIM imports, vCards, or slightly different names. iPhone can detect many duplicates automatically, and you can manually link cards when automatic detection misses one.
Automatic duplicate detection is available on iOS 16 or later. Manual linking works on older versions too.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if one person appears several times in Contacts, with a phone number on one card, an email on another, or duplicate entries created after syncing accounts.
Use Automatic Duplicate Detection
- Open the Contacts app.
- Scroll to the top of the list.
- If iPhone found duplicates, tap the duplicate or merge banner.
- Review the suggested matches.
- Tap Merge to combine them, or handle them individually if you want to inspect each card first.
If no banner appears, iPhone may not see any likely duplicates, or your iOS version may not support the automatic tool. Use manual linking instead.
Merge Contacts Manually
- Open Contacts and choose one duplicate entry.
- Tap Edit.
- Scroll down and tap Link Contacts.
- Select the other entry for the same person.
- Tap Link, review the combined card, and tap Done.
The contact appears as one card while the original linked cards remain connected in the background.
Prevent Duplicates from Returning
Review Sync Accounts
Open iCloud Contacts settings and Settings > Contacts > Accounts. If several accounts sync contacts, new duplicates can keep appearing. Consider using one primary contacts account.
Unlink If Needed
Open a merged contact, tap Edit, scroll to linked cards, and remove the link you no longer want. This separates the cards without deleting their information.
After Imports
SIM and vCard imports often create duplicate batches. Run the automatic duplicate finder after any bulk import.
