Markup is built into iPhone screenshots. Right after taking a screenshot, you can draw, add arrows or shapes, write text, crop the image, add a signature, or cover private details before saving or sharing.
These steps apply to recent iOS versions on all iPhone models.

Use this if you need to point something out in a screenshot, circle a setting, add instructions, sign a capture, or hide sensitive information before sending it.
Mark Up Right After Taking the Screenshot
- Take a screenshot with Side button + Volume Up on Face ID iPhones, or Home button + Side/Top button on older models.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner before it disappears.
- Use the pen, highlighter, pencil, eraser, and ruler tools along the bottom.
- Tap the plus button to add text, shapes, arrows, speech bubbles, a magnifier, or a signature.
- Drag the corner handles if you need to crop the screenshot.
- Tap Done, then save to Photos, save to Files, or share it.
Mark Up an Existing Screenshot
- Open Photos and find the screenshot. Use the Screenshots album if needed.
- Open the image and tap Edit.
- Tap the Markup button.
- Add drawings, text, shapes, or crops.
- Tap Done, then tap Done again to save.
Markup Tips
Hide Private Details Properly
Markup does not have a true blur tool. Use a filled, opaque rectangle over sensitive text. Avoid translucent highlighter strokes because the original text may remain readable.
Save a Signature
Tap the plus button and choose Signature. After you create one, it remains available for future screenshots.
Undo Edits
Use the undo button in Markup or shake the iPhone if Shake to Undo is enabled. This steps back through recent changes without discarding the whole screenshot.
Full-Page Safari Screenshots
When you screenshot a Safari page, tap the thumbnail and choose the Full Page tab to capture the scrollable page. You can mark it up and save it as a PDF.
