“Delete an iCloud account” can mean two very different things. Signing out of iCloud on one iPhone is reversible and does not delete the account. Permanently deleting the Apple ID closes the account across Apple services and cannot be undone after Apple’s cancellation window passes.
These steps apply to iOS 17 and iOS 18. Read the difference carefully before continuing.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you want to remove an Apple ID from this iPhone, remove a secondary iCloud Mail account, or understand what happens if you permanently delete the Apple ID itself.
Remove iCloud from This iPhone
- For the main Apple ID, open Settings, tap your name, scroll down, and tap Sign Out. Enter the Apple ID password, choose whether to keep local copies of data, and confirm.
- For a secondary account used for Mail, Contacts, or Calendar, open Settings > Mail, Contacts, or Calendar > Accounts, select the account, and tap Delete Account.
- This removes account data from the iPhone only. The iCloud account and its data remain available from other signed-in devices or the web.
Permanently Delete the Apple ID
- On a computer or another device, go to account.apple.com and sign in.
- Open the account privacy or data section and look for the delete-account option.
- Follow Apple’s identity and confirmation prompts.
- Review Apple’s warnings carefully. Purchases, iCloud photos, documents, backups, subscriptions, and services tied to that Apple ID can be affected.
- If Apple provides a cancellation window, use it immediately if you change your mind. After deletion completes, the account data cannot be recovered.
Before You Choose Permanent Deletion
Back Up First
Save photos, documents, contacts, and other needed data somewhere outside that Apple ID. An iCloud backup tied to the same account can disappear with the account.
Family Sharing
If the Apple ID organizes Family Sharing, deleting it can disrupt shared purchases, storage, and subscriptions for family members. Move or end those responsibilities first.
Most People Only Need Sign Out
If your goal is to stop using the account on this iPhone, signing out is usually the right choice. Permanent Apple ID deletion should be reserved for closing the account everywhere.
