How to Block a Phone Number on iPhone

Blocking a phone number on iPhone illustration

When you block a number on iPhone, the block applies across Phone, Messages, and FaceTime. Calls from that number do not ring through, messages do not alert you, and FaceTime calls from the same contact are blocked as well.

These steps apply to iPhones running iOS 15 or later, including current iOS 17 and iOS 18 versions.

Does This Affect You?

Use this guide if a scammer, telemarketer, saved contact, or any other number keeps calling or texting and you want the iPhone to stop notifying you.

Block a Number from Recent Calls

This is the fastest method when the unwanted number recently called you.

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap Recents.
  3. Find the number and tap the info button next to it.
  4. Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.
  5. Tap Block Contact to confirm.

After that, the same number is blocked for calls, text messages, and FaceTime.

Block a Number from Messages

Use this method when the unwanted contact reached you by text.

  1. Open Messages and select the conversation.
  2. Tap the name or phone number at the top.
  3. Tap the info button.
  4. Scroll down and choose Block this Caller.
  5. Confirm with Block Contact.

Block a Saved Contact

If the person is already in Contacts, block them from their contact card.

  1. Open Contacts or the Contacts tab in Phone.
  2. Select the contact.
  3. Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.
  4. Tap Block Contact to confirm.

Manage Blocked Numbers

View or Unblock Contacts

Open Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts. Swipe left on a number to unblock it, or use Edit and the red minus button.

Shared Block List

The same blocked list appears under Phone, Messages, and FaceTime settings. Changing it in one place changes it for all three.

Voicemail Behavior

A blocked caller may still be able to leave a voicemail, but the iPhone will not ring or notify you when that call comes in. Blocking works by number, so the same person can still contact you from a different number.

Call Records

Blocked call attempts can still appear in Recents, giving you a record that the number tried to call even though it did not ring through normally.
