CarPlay Not Connecting to iPhone: How to Fix It

CarPlay not connecting to iPhone illustration

CarPlay connection failures usually come from a cable, USB port, wireless pairing, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi setting, Screen Time restriction, car infotainment issue, or iOS compatibility problem.

This guide applies to wired and wireless CarPlay on iOS 17 and iOS 18.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps if CarPlay never appears, connects and drops, or the car display does not show your iPhone interface.

Check Cable and Connection Type

  1. For wired CarPlay, use an Apple or MFi-certified cable.
  2. Plug directly into the car’s CarPlay-capable USB port, not a charge-only port or hub.
  3. Try another USB port if the car has more than one.
  4. For wireless CarPlay, make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on.
  5. Restart the car infotainment system if the vehicle offers that option.

Re-Pair CarPlay

  1. On iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay.
  2. Tap the car and choose Forget This Car.
  3. Remove the phone from the car’s pairing list if the car offers that option.
  4. Reconnect by cable or start wireless pairing again.
  5. Follow prompts on both the iPhone and car display.

Check Settings That Block CarPlay

  1. Open Bluetooth settings and confirm Bluetooth is on.
  2. Make sure the car is not already connected to another phone.
  3. Open Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is allowed.
  4. Check General > CarPlay for cars listed under Not Connected and try a manual reconnect.

Intermittent Drops

Try a different cable or port for wired CarPlay. For wireless drops, temporarily test wired CarPlay to isolate wireless interference.

Restart iPhone

Restarting clears background Bluetooth and CarPlay pairing glitches.

Aftermarket Stereos

Check the stereo maker’s firmware update instructions, especially after iOS updates.

Update iOS

Install pending iOS updates because CarPlay compatibility issues can be fixed in later releases.
