A completely black and silent MacBook can be caused by a fully drained battery, failed charger, stuck power state, display issue, peripheral problem, or hardware failure. Start with power and display clues before assuming the worst.
This guide applies to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with Apple Silicon or Intel processors.
Does This Affect You?
Use these steps if pressing power produces no logo, no sound, no light, and no obvious response.
Rule Out a Dead Battery
- Connect the MacBook to a working outlet with the original or known-good charger.
- Leave it connected for at least 10 to 15 minutes without pressing keys.
- Look for a MagSafe light, fan noise, warmth, or other sign of power.
- Press the power button once and wait.
- Try a different charger and cable if there is still no response.
Force Restart and Reset Power
Apple Silicon
- Hold the power button for about 10 seconds even if the screen is black.
- Release, wait a few seconds, then press power once.
- If needed, disconnect power for 30 seconds, reconnect, and try again.
Intel MacBook
- Hold power for 10 seconds.
- Reset the SMC using the built-in battery key combination for your model.
- If that does not help, reset NVRAM with Option + Command + P + R at startup.
Check Whether It Is Actually a Display Problem
If the Mac chimes, warms up, shows a charging light, responds to Caps Lock, or spins a fan, it may be running with a black display. Try brightness keys and connect an external display.

Remove hubs, external drives, displays, and adapters, then try powering on with only the charger attached.
Signs of Life Matter
Any sound, warmth, light, or key response suggests the Mac has power and narrows the problem away from total power failure.
Service Needed
If there is no response after charging, a known-good charger, forced restart, and resets, the battery, power circuitry, or logic board needs professional diagnostics.
