Mac Screen Mirroring or AirPlay Not Working: How to Fix It

AirPlay screen mirroring depends on the Mac and Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV discovering each other on the local network. Most problems come from network mismatch, stale sessions, outdated software, or local network restrictions.

This guide applies to recent macOS versions mirroring to Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TVs.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps if your Mac cannot find the TV, mirroring fails to start, the connection freezes, or AirPlay drops soon after connecting.

Confirm Both Devices Use the Same Wi-Fi

1. On Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon and note the network name.
2. On Apple TV, open Settings > Network and compare the network name.
3. On a smart TV, check its network settings.
4. Move both devices to the same network, avoiding guest networks or separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names when possible.
5. Try mirroring again from Control Center or Displays settings.

Restart AirPlay on Both Ends

1. Stop mirroring from the Mac if a session is active or stuck.
2. Restart Apple TV from Settings > System > Restart, or unplug a smart TV for about 10 seconds.
3. Turn Mac Wi-Fi off and back on.
4. Try Screen Mirroring again.

Update Software

1. On Mac, open System Settings > General > Software Update.
2. On Apple TV, open Settings > System > Software Updates.
3. On a smart TV, check the TV’s firmware or software update menu.
4. Restart after updates and test AirPlay again.

Less Obvious AirPlay Causes

Router Isolation

AP Isolation or Client Isolation prevents devices on the same Wi-Fi from seeing each other. Disable it on the main network used for AirPlay.

Mesh Wi-Fi

If a mesh network causes discovery issues, move the Mac and TV closer to the same mesh node for a test.

Bluetooth

AirPlay discovery can use Bluetooth alongside Wi-Fi. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the Mac.

VPN

A VPN can route traffic away from the local network and block discovery. Turn it off temporarily to test.
