iCloud Drive Not Syncing on Mac: How to Fix It

iCloud Drive not syncing on Mac illustration

When iCloud Drive stalls, files may not appear on iPhone, iPad, or another Mac, and Finder may show spinning cloud icons or warning symbols. The cause is usually connection, storage, account mismatch, or a stuck background sync process.

This applies to recent macOS versions with iCloud Drive enabled.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps if files saved on the Mac do not show up elsewhere, or if iCloud Drive in Finder seems stuck uploading or downloading.

Check Connection and Restart iCloud Drive

  1. Confirm the Mac is online by opening a website.
  2. Open Finder and check iCloud Drive for stuck cloud or warning icons.
  3. Open System Settings, click your name, then open iCloud.
  4. Open iCloud Drive.
  5. Turn iCloud Drive off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  6. Give Finder a few minutes to update, especially if many files are syncing.

Check iCloud Storage

  1. Open System Settings > your name > iCloud.
  2. Review the storage bar.
  3. If storage is full or nearly full, open Manage Account Storage.
  4. Remove unneeded data or upgrade iCloud+ storage.
  5. After freeing space, return to Finder and wait for files to resume syncing.

Confirm the Apple Account

The Apple Account on the Mac must match the one used on the other devices. If it differs, files will not sync between them.

Check Apple System Status

iCloud Drive outages happen. Check Apple’s system status page before changing lots of settings if everything looks correct locally.

Fix One Stuck File

Move the stubborn file out of iCloud Drive and back in, or rename it slightly. Very long names or unusual characters can sometimes block a single item.

Restart the Mac

A full restart can clear a stuck iCloud background process after toggling iCloud Drive is not enough.
