The Passwords app gives macOS Sequoia and later a dedicated place for saved logins, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, verification codes, shared groups, and security recommendations. It uses the same iCloud Keychain data Safari and apps already rely on.
This guide applies to Macs running macOS Sequoia or later.
Does This Affect You?
Use Passwords if you want to view saved credentials, add a login manually, check for weak passwords, or manage shared family or team passwords.
View and Add Passwords
- Open Passwords from Spotlight or Launchpad.
- Authenticate with Touch ID, your Mac password, or your Apple Account password.
- Browse categories or search for a site or app.
- Open an entry to view its username, website, notes, and hidden password. Use the eye icon to reveal it.
- Click the plus button to add a new login manually.
- Edit an entry when the username, password, website, or notes need updating.
Check Security Recommendations
- Open Security Recommendations in the sidebar.
- Review entries marked weak, reused, or compromised.
- Prioritize compromised passwords first.
- Open an affected entry and choose Change Password on Website if available.
- Use Apple’s strong password suggestion when creating the replacement so each site gets a unique password.
Passwords App Tips
Share Securely
Use the share option or shared password groups instead of texting passwords in plain text. Recipients need compatible Apple devices and iCloud.
Shared Groups
Create a shared group for a household or small team, then add logins that group members can access and update.
Passkeys
Passkeys replace typed passwords on supported sites. The Passwords app stores them alongside regular logins and uses them during sign-in.
Autofill Issues
Check AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys in System Settings. If one site will not fill, confirm the saved website address matches the exact domain.
Import Carefully
Passwords can import from a CSV exported by another manager. Delete the CSV after importing because it contains credentials in plain text.
