Safari Tab Groups are named sets of tabs that stay saved separately. They help keep work, research, travel planning, recipes, or personal browsing from becoming one long crowded tab bar.
Tab Groups are available in Safari on macOS Monterey or later and can sync through iCloud Safari.
Does This Affect You?
Use Tab Groups if you keep many unrelated tabs open and want each project to have its own saved browser workspace.
Create a Tab Group
- Open Safari.
- Click the sidebar button or press Shift + Command + L.
- Open the tab group dropdown near the top of the sidebar.
- Choose New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group with Tabs if the current window already has useful tabs.
- Name the group and press Return.
Any tab opened while that group is selected belongs to that group until you move or close it.
Switch and Manage Tab Groups
- Show the Safari sidebar.
- Use the group dropdown or sidebar list to select another group.
- Right-click a group name to rename or delete it.
- Right-click a tab and choose Move to Tab Group to send it elsewhere.
Deleting a Tab Group closes the tabs inside it, so check before removing one.

Sync with iCloud
Turn on Safari in iCloud settings on each Apple device to sync Tab Groups, names, order, and tabs across Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
Pinned Tabs Per Group
Pinned tabs can belong to a specific group, so a project dashboard or shared calendar can stay attached to only that workspace.
Shared Tab Groups
Right-click a group name and choose Share Tab Group to collaborate with others. Invited people can see and add tabs.
Start Page Remains
Safari keeps its built-in Start Page group. Choose what new windows open with in Safari settings if you want a specific group or start behavior.
