Windows-only software can run on a Mac, but the best route depends on the Mac chip, the app, and whether you need one program or a full Windows desktop.
This guide covers Apple Silicon Macs and Intel Macs. Some methods work on both; Boot Camp is Intel-only.

Run One App Without Installing Windows
CrossOver from CodeWeavers can run some Windows programs through a compatibility layer. It does not create a full Windows PC inside your Mac.
- Download CrossOver for Mac and start the trial if you want to test compatibility first.
- Open CrossOver and search its app compatibility database.
- Choose a listed app or point CrossOver to your own .exe or .msi installer.
- Let CrossOver create a bottle for the app.
- Launch the Windows app from CrossOver or from the shortcut it creates.
CrossOver can be efficient because it does not run a whole copy of Windows, but compatibility varies. Check your exact app before paying.
Run Windows in a Virtual Machine
Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion run Windows in a window on macOS. This is the more complete option for business apps, utilities, and software that expects a normal Windows environment.
- Install Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion.
- On Apple Silicon, install Windows 11 for ARM. Parallels can guide the download, while VMware may require you to provide Microsoft’s ARM image.
- On Intel Macs, use a Windows ISO and a valid Windows license.
- Finish the Windows setup inside the virtual machine.
- Install the Windows program inside Windows just as you would on a PC.
- Use shared folders, clipboard sharing, and full-screen mode if your VM app supports them.
Use Boot Camp on Intel Macs Only
- On an Intel Mac, open Boot Camp Assistant from Applications > Utilities.
- Follow the prompts to partition the drive and install Windows from an ISO.
- Let Boot Camp install Apple’s Windows support software.
- Restart and hold Option at startup to choose macOS or Windows.
Apple Silicon Macs do not support Boot Camp. For M1, M2, M3, M4, and newer Macs, use a virtual machine or compatibility layer instead.
Choosing the Best Method
Performance
Boot Camp gives Intel Macs native Windows performance but requires rebooting. Virtual machines are convenient because macOS and Windows run side by side. CrossOver is lightest, but only when the target app works well in it.
Cost and Licensing
CrossOver and Parallels are paid products with trials. VMware Fusion is available free for many users, including commercial use since late 2024. Virtual machines and Boot Camp still require a valid Windows license.
One-Time Use
For a single short task, renting a cloud Windows desktop or using another Windows PC may be cheaper than buying a license and setting up a VM.
